Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen (CL-600-2D24)
Operational Profile & Aerodynamic Design
Certified under type designation CL-600-2D24 (now supported by MHI RJ Aviation Group), the Bombardier CRJ900 is a 75-to-90-seat stretched derivative of the CRJ700. In Europe, it serves as a core hub-feeder jet for Lufthansa CityLine (Frankfurt and Munich hubs), CityJet, Xfly (operating wet-lease feeder flights for SAS out of Tallinn, Copenhagen, and Stockholm), and Air Nostrum.
The CRJ900 features a low-mounted supercritical wing equipped with full-span leading-edge slats, double-slotted flaps, and canted winglets that reduce induced drag during climb and high-altitude cruise. Its low ground clearance and integral forward passenger airstair allow rapid 20-minute gate turnarounds without ground support stairs.
Propulsion, Avionics & Control Architecture
- GE CF34-8C5 Turbofans: Powered by two rear-fuselage-mounted General Electric CF34-8C5 high-bypass turbofans (5:1 bypass ratio) controlled by dual-channel FADEC, rated at 13,360 lbf (59.4 kN) normal takeoff thrust and 14,510 lbf (64.5 kN) with Automatic Power Reserve (APR). Note: Like all CRJ models, the CF34 engines do not feature autothrottle servos; thrust levers are positioned manually through physical detents (CLB, TOGA, MAX POWER).
- Rockwell Collins Pro Line 4 Avionics: Six-tube CRT/LCD EFIS suite consisting of dual PFDs, dual NDs, and two EICAS displays (Primary and Status/Synoptic pages), coupled with dual FMS-4200 units.
- Triplex Hydraulic & Flight Controls: Three independent 3,000 psi hydraulic systems (Systems 1, 2, and 3) power the primary flight controls, flight/ground spoilers, and T-tail stall protection (Stick Shaker and Stick Pusher) governed by dual Stall Protection Computers (SPC).
