Airbus A220 Family (BD-500-1A10 / BD-500-1A11)
Operational Profile & Advanced Composite Airframe
Originally designed by Bombardier as the CSeries (CS100 / CS300) and manufactured by Airbus Canada in Mirabel, the A220 family bridges the 100-to-145-seat European regional and mainline segments. It serves as the exclusive single-type fleet of Baltic carrier airBaltic (based in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius), as well as a cornerstone regional fleet for SWISS, Air France, and ITA Airways.
The airframe comprises 46% carbon-fiber composites (resin-transfer-molded dry carbon wings, empennage, and rear fuselage) and 24% aluminum-lithium alloys, yielding a wide 5-abreast (2-3) cabin with large overhead bins and panoramic windows while keeping structural weight remarkably low.
Collins Pro Line Fusion, FBW & PW1500G GTF
- Primary Flight Control System (PFCS): 3-axis digital Fly-By-Wire controlled via cockpit sidesticks and processed by three Primary Flight Control Computers (PFCC). Normal Mode provides full flight envelope, bank angle, load factor (+2.5g / -1.0g), and high-speed/low-speed protection.
- Pratt & Whitney PW1500G Geared Turbofans: Equipped with a 3.06:1 planetary fan drive gear system (FDGS) that allows the 73-inch 18-blade fan to rotate at one-third the speed of the low-pressure compressor and turbine, delivering a 12:1 bypass ratio and a 20% reduction in specific fuel consumption.
- Pro Line Fusion Glass Cockpit: Four or five 15.1-inch landscape LCD displays with integrated Electronic Checklist (ECL), graphical flight planning, Synthetic Vision System (SVS), and Brake-By-Wire (BBW) carbon brakes.
